Oh Baby! We're Expecting!

This one is for the grown folks, so I’ll give you a second to send the kids out of the room….

All clear?

Good.

We all know where babies come from, right? I mean, one minute you’re holding hands and kissing and the next minute, BAM! you’re pregnant. Theoretically speaking, it happens faster and with much more detail and excitement than that, but the whole process has been foolproof for centuries. Women around the world download apps to keep track of cycles, use protection when possible, and do all that they can to avoid it. While others, take fertility treatments, track ovulation and plan the perfect time for intercourse to achieve it.

Our conversation went like this:

Thomas: I’m getting you pregnant tonight.

Me: Baeeeee. You know we can’t handle a baby!

Thomas: We won’t ever be 100% ready. Let’s just try. If it’s in God’s will, it’ll happen.

Me: You right…..(the rest is history)

Literally, that was it. That was the conversation. Then, six weeks later I find myself still waiting for my cycle to arrive.

Picture this, it’s September in Houston and I’m driving my husband’s car to work because he’s getting my oil changed. His a/c stops working mid-way through my drive home and I’m forced to let down the windows in 90-degree weather.

I get to Walgreens to buy a pack of pregnancy tests, because I’m sick of living in suspense, and the woman in front of me is serenading the cashier with her own rendition of “Tennessee Whiskey” by Chris Stapleton. I’m completely over it.

I get home at the exact same time as Thomas and show him the box of pregnancy tests; we nervously stare at one another and immediately say in unison, “OPEN IT!”

Open. Uncap. Take the test. Wait……….

It felt like the results showed up immediately: PREGNANT

I’d be lying if I said I was happy immediately, but here’s why: as a young woman we’re told to avoid babies until marriage. Once you get married everyone wants to know when babies are coming. Thomas and I knew we wanted babies but we also knew we wanted to wait a while after getting married and travel the world. The timing was perfect but I was genuinely scared.

Being a mother brings new meaning to a woman’s life, and I wasn’t sure I was ready for that type of change. Until our first doctors visit, everything changed……
