Home Ownership!

Building a Home: Pt. 1

This blog post is long overdue, but since we have officially celebrated the 1 YEAR ANNIVERSARY of “Houston Home-ownership” I thought this post was fitting. After buying a home and overseeing the entire process from middle to end (because we were still living in Waco at the beginning) I figured I would write about the process from December of 2017.

A Foundation and Studs…..

As simply as I can put this, the home was nothing but studs in June or July of 2017 when Thomas and I first saw it. My dad and sister are architects my mom is an engineer. All of them know a lot about homes, quality products, essential items to be included in a home at the beginning stages, and the best and worst signs to look for in a home. We brought my parents to the initial site to see the materials being used and the methods for construction. My parents agreed, the home was very well built from the beginning and because it was built in Houston city limits, it had to undergo multiple rounds of inspections to make sure it was being built exactly to code.

We’ve got options…

Ok so, I’m a perfectionist. I like what I like and I don’t like to settle for less than perfect. Buying a house blew that all out of the water. When choosing our finishes and fixtures, I had these grand ideas but realized COST IS EVERYTHING! Not only that, we were choosing upgrades with a stand alone company and not a large home builder like D.R Horton or KB Homes. We had to go to the tile/flooring store ourselves and start from scratch picking flooring options and tile for the kitchen back splash & bathrooms.

Drywall, Sheetrock, Taping and Floating, OH MY!

I’d be lying if I said I didn’t stop by the house everyday either before or after work to check out the progress. The home stayed unfinished for A WHILE. To be honest, much longer than I thought it should have but when we inquired about the building process our builder told us that “Hurricane Harvey disrupted their labor force, so they were waiting for the contractors to return.” Obviously, this was a horrible lie which led to many other secrets that we found our builder kept from us during the building process….BUT that’s neither here nor there. The home was coming together and we were excited!
